At least one life was lost and 172 people rescued from the burning Putri Yasmin ferry on Wednesday morning. Indonesia's maritime record is marred by a string of accidents over the years.

Just two weeks ago, the Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry caught fire off Java, resulting in at least five fatalities. In 2011, a passenger plane crashed into the sea off Sulawesi, killing all 102 people on board.
